On January 20th, 2005, two volunteers from Challenges Worldwide in the United Kingdom arrived in Belize to work with BCVI and its sister organisation, CARE-Belize, on a National Policy for Disabilities. Once implemented, this policy will improve the lives of all Belizeans living with a disability.
At the start of January 2005, two optometrists arrived to assist BCVI with clinics for three months. One is working out of the Punta Gorda office in the Toledo District in the south and the other is in the Orange Walk District in the north. These optometrists have been working alongside BCVI's Regional Field Officers conducting clinics within the office as well as in the villages and have even gone into schools to screen students' eyes.
Doctors and surgeons come to BCVI from all over the world to work with us in achieving our goal of helping Belizeans with eye problems live more fulfilling lives. Dr. Alistair Rennie visited Belize from Scotland to perform squint surgeries at BCVI's National Eye Clinic. The story of Dr. Rennie and his work, "9 Days, 9 Success Stories," was published in local newspaper, The Belize Times.
Every year World Sight Day is celebrated on the second Thursday in October. On October 14th, 2004, BCVI seized the chance to let the people of Belize know about World Sight Day and eye health by publishing the article, "Don't Lose Sight of Your Vision," in The Belize Times.
