BCVI works along with the Itinerant Teachers of the Special Education Department of the Government of Belize in order to give Visually Impaired (VI) children the opportunity at an education. Through support within the school system, VI students are able to attend classes among their sighted peers at their local schools. Braille texts and a computer programme known as "JAWS" are some of the tools used to help the students.

We provide the students with text books & articles in both braille & large print. Audio books are also provided where necessary. Further support is given to the students & classrooms with equipment such as braille machines, slate & stylus, braille paper, reading enhancers & magnifiers.

Braille Unit

The Braille Unit has been in operation for over fifteen years now. I continues to benefit from small grants & volunteer assistance, which has enabled us to keep up with the increased demand for books & other texts as more VI children enter into the school system.

We train our Regional Field Officers in the use of braille typewriters, after which those employees train our blind or visually impaired clients in their use. As these Officers are stationed in different areas of the country, this method of training allows us to reach as many towns & villages throughout the country as possible.
